Spiros Skourtis

Associate Professor (Biophysics & Chemical Physics)

Department of Physics, University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus

My main research field is the modeling (theory and computation) of molecular charge transport phenomena in chemical, biological and molecular-device settings.

Much of my research has focused on the effects of molecular motion on electronic tunneling (inelastic tunneling, conformational gating, dephasing) for protein- (azurins and DNA photolyases) and small-molecule electron transfer reactions.

During my recent sabbatical leave at Duke University, USA, I started to work on energy transport, modeling exciton migration in novel metal-organic framework materials that have potential applications for artificial energy harvesting assemblies. This work is in close collaboration with experimental groups at the Energy Frontier Research Center of UNC Chapel Hill.

My research methodology involves phenomenological modeling in the context of the theory of transport in open quantum systems (density matrix/stochastic and green’s function methods), and more detailed computations on “realistic” systems using molecular dynamics (MD) and semi-empirical or ab initio quantum chemistry (QC) methods.
